In tribute to the late filmmaker John Singleton, The Cabot presents a special screening of his groundbreaking film: 1991’s Boyz n the Hood.
After being suspended from school at the age of ten, Tre is sent to live with his father, Furious Styles, in Crenshaw, a tough South Central Los Angeles neighborhood. As Tre grows up, his hard-nosed father tries to instill proper values and respect in him, and later his devout girlfriend Brandi teaches him about faith. Brothers Doughboy and Ricky Baker, Tre’s friends through his teenage years, don’t have the same kind of support system. Ricky hopes to escape Crenshaw through a football scholarship and Doughboy is a small-time criminal who has been arrested several times. At eighteen, all three are drawn into the neighborhood’s booming drug and gang culture, with increasingly tragic results.
Starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Morris Chestnut, Angela Bassett, Nia Long, Regina King and Laurence Fishburne. Written and directed by Singleton, who was nominated for 2 Academy Awards, becoming both the first African American and the youngest person at the age of 24 to be nominated for Best Director.
