The Florida Project$1.75 - $9.75
Set over the course of one summer, The Florida Project follows Moonee, a six year old who lives with her mother, Halley, in a budget motel along one of the commercial strips catering to the Disney World tourists outside Orlando, Florida. Halley, who survives largely on welfare, has little respect for people, an attitude that she has passed down to Moonee, who curses and gives the finger like her mother. Moonee, along with her ragtag playmates, gets into mischief and adventures while being a thorn in the side to Bobby, the motel manager. Over the course of the summer, Halley begins to alienate the other residents of the motel and begins to take more and more extreme measures to maintain the life she leads with Moonee.
Written and directed by Sean Baker (Tangerine), the film stars Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe, with newcomers Brooklynn Prince (Moonee) and Bria Vinaite (Halley).
The Boston Globe – “‘The Florida Project’ is – in nerve, guts, heart, and mind – one of the finest films of 2017.”
The New York Times – “To balance joy and desperation as gracefully as Mr. Baker does – to interweave giddiness and heartbreak – is no easy feat.”
The Wall Street Journal – “As in previous films, Mr. Baker mixes amateur and professional actors to exceptional effect.”
National Public Radio – “Baker has imbued this whole terrific movie with a child’s sense of discovery – the sort that can turn a decrepit, pastel corner of Orlando into a vibrant cinematic playground.”
Rated R. Run time 1 hour 51 minutes.
