Anna is a bereft young German woman whose fiance, Frantz, was killed in the trenches of World War I. Adrien, a French veteran of the war, makes a mysterious appearance in her town, placing flowers on Frantz’s grave. Adrien’s presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany’s defeat, yet Anna gradually becomes closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz. Written and directed by Francois Ozon (Swimming Pool, 8 Women) and based on the 1932 film Broken Lullaby by Ernst Lubistch.
The Wall Street Journal – “A very modern period piece — and a beautiful one — with a fascinating lineage.”
The Boston Globe – “‘Frantz’ is pleasurable slow going, developing its themes at an amble but with a measure of suspense, sympathy toward its characters, and a lasting faith in filmmaking craft.”
San Francisco Chronicle – “Ozon creates a beautiful stillness in ‘Frantz’ that makes us feel we are there in the midst of these lives, witnessing the purity of their sadness.”
Rated PG-13. Run time 1 hour 54 minutes.
